The 100 Most Valuable Pokemon Cards

Four things push a Pokemon card's price up: how few were printed, how old it is, how well it survived, and whether people want it. A card has to have more than one of those to be worth real money. First-edition and shadowless printings of the 1999 Base Set clear all four at once, which is why they sit at the top of almost every list like this one.

Modern cards can be valuable too, but for a different reason: alternate-art and secret-rare cards are pulled at very low rates from packs that most people open and then sell. Condition matters far more here than age, because a card printed last year has no excuse for being scuffed.

Most cards, including most holos, are worth a few dollars. That is not a failure of the card — it is what mass printing means.

The rarest Pokemon cards and the most valuable Pokemon cards are not the same list, and the difference is demand. Trophy cards handed out at 1990s tournaments exist in single-digit numbers and sell for enormous sums — they are both rarest and most valuable. But plenty of genuinely scarce promos sell for very little, because almost nobody is looking for them.
